Dextromethorphan and guaifenesin are well absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Dextromethorphan is metabolized mainly in the liver and excreted in the urine, unchanged and as demethylated metabolites.
Dextromethorphan has a rapid onset of action, observable within 30 minutes to 1 hour after each administration. In therapeutic doses it does not show ciliary activity and its antitussive effects persist for 5 to 6 hours.
