PHARMACOKINETICS AND PHARMACODYNAMICS: GELAN PLUS® is an antacid/antiflatulent with pH buffering and bile salt uptake effect.The magaldrate/symethicone formulation or its individual drugs have the following pharmacodynamic properties:
– The simethicone contained in GELAN PLUS® is an antifoaming agent that contributes to decrease gastric distension; therefore, it decreases gastroesophageal reflux, reducing dyspeptic symptomatology.
– Both magaldrate and simethicone are practically not absorbed, so they lack clinically significant systemic effects. The amount of aluminum and magnesium released by the magaldrate molecule is minimal.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Hypersensitivity to the components of the formula. In patients with severe renal dysfunction (creatinine clearance < 30 ml/min), GELAN PLUS® should be used only with monitoring of serum magnesium and aluminum levels. Serum aluminum levels should not exceed 40 ng/ml.
