Buying followers on instagram | trendy taste
EnlargeThe Instagram post of the «fake influencer» @almu_ripamonti in which she celebrates reaching 100 thousand followers. They were all bought by H2H, as were the comments and likes. Friday, February 09, 2018, 15:10h
H2H, as an agency specializing in influencer marketing with an analytical approach, wanted to bring to light some fraud situations in the sector as a wake-up call for key players to start approaching this type of marketing differently.
Just three weeks later, when the fake influencer started to reach relevance (30 thousand followers), several agencies and FMCG brands started contacting her to offer her paid actions and other collaborations, such as sending product or invitations.
During the months of the research project, which the agency H2H baptized as Sirena, video recordings were made of the whole process -see below-, thanks to the participation of a group of Audiovisual Communication students from the University of Malaga. The result, a documentary that shows the reality of the fraud of some influencers, which could be summarized in three key points:
Luis díaz (h2h): «being recognized is a source of pride, but also a source of pride.
The lack of regulation and control in the world of influencers has led to various forms of fraud that sometimes neither brands nor agencies know how to control. It is becoming easier and cheaper to artificially «inflate» profiles by buying followers, likes or comments to make them more attractive, which causes a high percentage of influencers to commit irregularities to take advantage of this situation.
As an agency specialized in influencer marketing with an analytical approach, from H2H we wanted to bring to light some situations of fraud in the sector as a wake-up call so that the main actors begin to consider this type of marketing in a different way.
Last October, we decided to open a profile on Instagram to «create» a new influencer: @almu_ripamonti. But it wasn’t a personal account like any of us can have, in this case we created a fake one.
We made it grow quickly and artificially by buying followers, comments and «likes». To go unnoticed in this practice, we took great care of the content of the profile with high quality professional photographs. As an «influencer» we hired an actress.
The fake influencer created to demonstrate how to
The Instagram account @almu_ripamonti, of the actress Almudena Ripamonti, reached in a few days more than 150 thousand followers, but practically all of them were bots or fake followers that had been bought as part of an experiment by the agency H2H to warn of fraud and the dangers of trusting in their success.
The influencer phenomenon became a new marketing resource for big brands and advertising agencies, but the possibility of buying followers is real and the power of influence can be disguised with little money.
Soon, several advertising agencies and brands were interested in her to promote their products and services through her profile, even going to parties reserved for celebrities on the network or enjoying free meals and trips, hiding the fact that it was all a fiction.
The promoters of the fake claim that there is a «lack of regulation and control».
The great fraud of influencers
The project is called «Sirena» and was born with the aim of uncovering the fraud of fake influencers. In order to carry out the study, the agency hired a young actress to create a new instagram account @almu_ripamonti. A photographer specialized in these profiles and a fashion stylist were responsible for the quality content for the new fake influencer. The project had to be low cost and all the clothes, shoes and accessories used in the photos were bought and returned after each shooting session.
Nights in hotels, cab rides, lunches and dinners for her and her friends, invitations to events, sending fashion and beauty products… the total freebie for having 100,000 fake followers bought at a boot farm for 500 euros.
