«The information technology revolution induced the emergence of informationalism, as the material foundation of the new society. [Of particular importance was its role in enabling the development of interconnected networks as a self-expanding and dynamic form of organization of human activity. This network logic transforms all spheres of social and economic life.»
The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) in society has greatly influenced the way in which we communicate, coexist, relate, work and above all, have given a shift in the way we conceive our lives. ICTs, finally, can create new areas of literacy and lifelong learning: chat-rooms, distribution lists, Internet-delivered courses or online libraries, such as the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library (BVMC), the first project created and maintained by Taller Digital.
In relation to Higher Education, the use of ICTs is widespread throughout the world: they are taking hold both on university campuses and in open and distance systems. These technologies are applied in this environment to develop teaching materials; to facilitate communication between students, teachers and the outside world; to develop and present lectures; in academic research; and to provide administrative support to learners. These are the objectives of the Practicum software, developed by Taller Digital for the «Practicum» subjects of the UA Nursing Degree, which is currently used by more than 1,500 users.
Open and distance learning, as well as non-formal education, can serve as a bridge for students to re-enter the formal education system, as well as to facilitate lifelong learning and employability. In these areas, the fundamental application of ICTs is based on the principle of flexibility.
