Todavía recuerdo la vez que vi la película «Con Ganas de Triunfar» en la televisión por primera vez. «Stand and Deliver» ha sido, quizás, una de las películas más vistas en Bolivia. No sólo por la exitosa historia que cuenta, sino también porque la película se basó en la vida del profesor de origen boliviano Jaime Escalante. Este increíble hombre dejó Bolivia, a los 33 años, en busca de mejores oportunidades en Estados Unidos. La educación fue su llamada. El trabajo duro era su lenguaje. La determinación era su mensaje.
Llegó a Estados Unidos con muy pocos conocimientos de inglés. Además de su familia, trajo a Estados Unidos sus conocimientos matemáticos y su mejor actitud. Trajo consigo a Ganas. Creo que ganas era una de sus palabras favoritas. En sus propias palabras, ganas significaba: «El deseo de aprender. La capacidad de sacrificio para mejorar. El deseo de salir adelante. Ganas también significa trabajo duro».
Con ganas de triunfar. Rápidamente, se enteró de que su certificación boliviana como profesor no era válida en Estados Unidos. Tuvo que empezar de cero. Trabajando en diferentes trabajos ocasionales para mantener a su familia, mientras asistía a la universidad para seguir su vocación. Se enseñó a sí mismo el inglés y eventualmente obtuvo un título universitario para poder acreditarse como maestro. Fue en Los Ángeles, 1974, cuando comenzó a trabajar en la escuela secundaria Garfield. Primero enseñó Álgebra y después Cálculo.
