Talavera de la Reina (pronunciación española: [talaˈβeɾa ðe la ˈrejna]) es una ciudad y municipio de España, perteneciente a la comunidad autónoma de Castilla-La Mancha. Con 83.303 habitantes[2] es el segundo municipio más poblado de la provincia de Toledo y el cuarto de la región.
Aunque la ciudad se encuentra a caballo entre las dos orillas del Tajo, a pocos kilómetros aguas abajo de la confluencia del primero con el Alberche, la mayor parte de la urbanización se concentra en la margen derecha (norte). Hay dos islas en el centro de la ciudad, llamadas Isla Grande e Isla Chamelo. Tres puentes cruzan el Tajo en Talavera.
Hay restos de culturas prehistóricas en la zona. El pueblo fue fundado por los celtas como vado del Tajo. La primera mención de la ciudad (con el nombre de Aebura) aparece en la descripción que hace Livio de una batalla entre los romanos y los carpetanos, una tribu celtíbera. Tras la conquista romana de Hispania, fue conocida como Caesarobriga, uno de los muchos topónimos celtas conservados en la Hispania romana, con un nombre que connota «fortificación» y que se extendió a muchas ciudades no fortificadas: «Caesarobriga fue un importante centro agrícola y cerámico en los siglos III y IV a.C. Durante el periodo visigodo, Talavera adoptó una variante de su nombre celtibérico: Elbora o Ebora. Su nombre moderno deriva de Talabayra, la traducción musulmana de este nombre visigodo. La ciudad fue conquistada por fuerzas musulmanas en el año 713 y conquistada por fuerzas cristianas bajo Alfonso VI de Castilla en 1083.
