The street had its origin in 1504 when the Catholic RR. installed the military camp of San Lázaro (located in the current neighborhood of San Lázaro). The street served to communicate with the city. But it was from the arrival of the railroad to the city and the construction of the station in the Avenida de Andaluces in 1874, when the street became one of the main entrances and exits of the city.
The Great Captain, a title given to him by his soldiers in 1496 after inflicting a severe defeat on the French in the battle of Atella, in Italy, was born in Montilla on September 1, 1453 and died in Granada on December 2, 1515, a few months before King Ferdinand.
At his death he was buried in the Franciscans of Granada, until, at the initiative of his wife, Maria de Manrique, Duchess of Sessa and Terranova, the Monastery of San Jeronimo was prepared to convert it into a family Pantheon for the repose of the Great Captain, his wife and part of his family. The French desecrated his tomb during his stay in Granada (1810-1812). They took his body, which, after several vicissitudes, returned to Granada, although it is not possible to affirm with certainty that the remains in San Jeronimo are those of the Great Captain.
