Col legi de notaris de catalunya
Notarial association of catalonia
The number of notaries existing in Catalonia is regulated within the framework of the notarial demarcation established in coordination between the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Ministry of Justice. Every five years, if deemed necessary, and always every six years, the demarcation is reviewed to adjust the real needs to the population centers and the volume of activity generated in order to provide the best service to the citizens.
There are 34 notarial districts – 17 in the province of Barcelona, 6 in the province of Girona, 6 in the province of Lleida and 5 in the province of Tarragona. Each one of them has a Delegate and a Sub-Delegate, who support the Board of Directors in the exercise of its functions in the territory.

The Notary’s office enjoys, thanks to its spirit, a remarkable social prestige and deep-rootedness acquired continuously through the rigorous drafting of documents and the impartial advice that notaries provide every day to the citizenship in the place and at the key moment in which the legal acts and businesses of greater personal and patrimonial transcendence are granted.
This deep-rootedness has been particularly evident in Catalonia, where civil society is very dynamic and vital, and where the notary’s office has made a decisive contribution to the preservation and autonomous evolution of private law: from the 13th and 14th century, when Roman Law was introduced through notarial practice and the richest maritime law in the Mediterranean was created, to the 20th century, when the participation of notaries in the drafting of the 1960 Compilation or in the process of renewal of civil law initiated in 1984, culminating in the drafting of the Civil Code of Catalonia, has been relevant and significant, passing through the periods in which the country has lacked its own legislative institutions and the notary has adapted the old laws to the changing reality of each moment.
