We have organized these meetings to be held throughout the school year, once a month, to share experiences and have contact with realities of other countries. We have a great time sharing and asking questions. We appreciate all the support of Eva Gómez, school principal, who was present, Ricardo in the technical part and the AMPA CSC team. We missed the coffee and cookies, but they will be present at all the following conferences.
Today we were joined by Dr. John Harutunian from Massachusetts – USA, who has a B.A. in Education from the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration (Boston University). He is currently Principal of Oak Hill Middle School in Massachusetts, a school with 600 students and 100 teachers.
I meet many people who do not enjoy what they do, they just spend their lives getting used to it. They don’t get pleasure from what they do, they suffer it instead of enjoying it and wait for the weekend to come. But I also meet people who love what they do and can’t imagine doing anything else. If you tell them «don’t do this anymore» they would ask themselves: What are you talking about?

In the first chapter Traveling and Seeing Schools of the work that we use as a pretext for our considerations, the reader finds a battery of ideas that allow us to understand the genealogy of this book as well as its assumptions and basic purpose: to arouse curiosity, to enrich knowledge about the past and present of our schools, to foster awareness and a positive attitude of respect and conservation of the historical school heritage, and to promote the hobby of traveling to see schools (p. 19; see also p. 23-24).
promote the hobby of traveling to see schools (p. 19; see also p. 23-24). This study, which has a consciously informative bias and is intended to provide news without further pretensions, is a study that is not intended to be a major source of information, but rather to be a source of information for the general public.
As is well known, displacements can respond to very diverse motivations. Well, right from the beginning, JGR clearly indicates his interest in the knowledge of school buildings as part of what, precisely in the context of those new historiographic orientations to which we referred at the beginning of our reflections, is known as the material culture of the school. The abundant photographs included in this book, together with the author’s comments, have been taken bearing in mind the idea that a building is not stones, it is a plan with which the inspector Juan Llarena Luna justified in 1912 his request to the Junta para la Ampliación de Estudios (JAE) for financial aid to enable him to study the school architecture of European countries. The collection of images of school buildings offered to the readers allows us to become aware of a past reality that is now inapresentable. Photographing schools is a way of capturing what remains of something in many cases already petrified, of immortalizing the moribund, of refossilizing the fossilized (p. 41).
