The president of Asaja Cordoba, Ignacio Fernandez de Mesa, has expressed his satisfaction after the Hydrographic Confederation of the Guadalquivir (CHG) «has heeded our historical request to expand the irrigable area of the Genil-Cabra», a demand that has also been made by the Water Forum of Cordoba that coordinates the Delegation of Agriculture of the Andalusian Government in Cordoba.
For Asaja, it is positive that this step forward is taken, since «it will be very beneficial» for the province of Cordoba, especially for the municipalities of Santaella and La Carlota. However, «it is only a first step, and the actions should begin as soon as possible with a real budget to carry out the execution of the works,» said Fernandez de Mesa.
He also considers that, in parallel, in this irrigable area should be carried out the necessary studies to also allow the expansion of the right bank of the Genil-Cabra Canal in Puente Genil (Córdoba).
It is also necessary to modernize irrigation with direct intake of the Guadalquivir, which have never had aid for improvement and are essential for employment and economic development throughout the Vega del Guadalquivir.
Hydrographic confederations
(CHGuadalquivir) The Hydrographic Confederation of the Guadalquivir, an agency under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, and the Provincial Council of Cordoba have agreed to resume and promote projects to improve water infrastructure included in the agreements signed between the basin agency, the provincial institution and the provincial water company, under the Provincial Council, Emproacsa.
The president of the CHG has explained that the projects contemplated in the agreements (three of the Provincial Council of Cordoba and four others of Emproacsa) are already drafted by the basin organization, except for the modernization and expansion of the Sierra Boyera Drinking Water Treatment Plant, which is in the drafting phase. In this sense, Salvador Fuentes also explained that Emproacsa is also drafting the project for the renovation of the supply pipelines of Fuente Palmera and its villages, which will involve an investment of nearly three million euros.
