Demonstration in granada against the provisional release of la lorca.

It was located a few steps from the Lorca family home on the Acera del Casino. In fact, the poet watched the coming and going of the square from his room every day. Mora Guarido describes the place as «A vulgar small square, the most vulgar of the small squares of Granada without perspectives and without grace and in the center a bad marble statue that pretends to represent the poor Marianita in the figure of a fat blonde matron».
In the Plaza de la Libertad (inaugurated in 1988 and located in front of the Triunfo gardens) there is a reminder of the place where the heroine was executed. On the four sides of the base of an iron cross there is an inscription from the 19th century: «On May 25, 1831 the young Mariana Pineda was sacrificed in this place destined to the torture of crimes, because she longed for the freedom of the Homeland. In 1840, the Constitutional City Council and the Territorial Court ordered that in memory of such an illustrious victim, the sacred sign of our Holy Religion be placed in this place and that no more executions of justice be carried out there».

The implication of Mariana Pineda in a supposed constitutionalist plot, discovered in 1826, and in which she acted as intermediary between the liberals of Granada and the exiles of Gibraltar, raised many suspicions.
However, when in 1828 she successfully prepared the escape of her cousin Fernández Álvarez de Sotomayor, an army commander who had been condemned to death for his involvement in the Riego uprising (1820), Mariana Pineda was arrested again.
Mariana Pineda became a legend, heroine and martyr of the liberal cause to the point of inspiring coplas, songs and plays, the most famous of which was the theatrical drama written by Federico García Lorca.
