The Prado de San Sebastián has been a large expanse of land southeast of the city of Seville, with variable boundaries over time. It owes its name to the hermitage of San Sebastian, located in the place now occupied by the church of the same name in the neighborhood of El Porvenir.
It occupied the land between the Tagarete stream, which separated it from the city walls, to the Huerta del Rey and San Bernardo; to the east and south its boundary was on the Tamarguillo stream, which at that time ran along the current Cardenal Bueno Monreal Avenue. To the west it reached the Guadalquivir River.
This situation, between watercourses that overflowed easily in the rainy season, made it a floodable, semi-banished land, unsuitable for cultivation. Therefore, it served as ejido (or communal land) where cattle grazed for the nearby slaughterhouse at the Puerta de la Carne and where the threshing floors of the nearby orchards were installed.
From the time of the conquest, the west end was the residence of the Bishop of Morocco. Later the place belonged to the Inquisition, and finally Charles II ceded it to the University of Mareantes, who built the Palace of San Telmo.

In 2008, the central library building of the University of Seville was being built on the grounds of this park, a project executed by the Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid,[3][4] however the works were stopped and both the High Court of Justice of Andalusia and the Supreme Court ordered its demolition and the restoration of the environment to its previous state, as it was built on a green area, which are part of the Prado de San Sebastián Gardens. The demolition began in August 2012.[5] The demolition began in August 2012.[5
