Why it’s cool: Play De Record specializes in vinyl and studio equipment, all carefully selected. Quality over quantity, so to speak. DJs can also spin in the practice room for twenty bucks an hour. In the early years of the business, you’d find a lot of flyers from obscure parties there, making themselves an indispensable factor in the city’s dance scene.A1
Why it’s cool: There is no other vinyl store in New York with more used records than A1. The focus is mainly on soul, jazz and funk, but enthusiasts will also find plenty of disco, house and techno. Hip-hop heroes like DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Havoc from Mobb Deep used to hang out here – the proof is in shiny Polaroids on the walls. The Thing
Why it’s cool: The owner of The Thing, Larry Fisher, scours auctions and freemarkets to buy rare vinyl gems for next to nothing. No need for you to go to all that trouble. The prices he charges are negotiable, and if you can’t agree on a price, you can spend your money on the comic books and vintage porn he also sells.AdvertisementReckless Records

Discos paradiso

June 21, 2014 by Hans 1 comment Recently I spent a midweek in Barcelona. Normally I prepare myself well for a city trip by making a list of where the cool record stores are. This time I didn’t get around to it. That didn’t seem to be a problem, even without making an effort I found the necessary vinyl offerings.
The street where my hotel was located, near La Rambla and Plaça de Catalunya, turned out to be a mecca for record lovers. Over half a dozen music stores are packed into Carrer Tallers and adjacent streets.
My favorite store, however, was Discos Revolver. What do I say, stores, because they have two branches right next to each other. With both new and second hand music, also in less common genres. Nice stores with lots of nooks and crannies to get lost in.
I also came across vinyl in the wild at the little antique market on the Placa Nova in front of the Gothic Cathedral. At least two stalls also had bins of records. I didn’t find much in particular to my liking here, but of course it just depends on what you’re looking for.

Disco 100

In the summer of 2015, I visited Barcelona during my summer vacation. Even during vacation, I often can’t restrain myself from looking for some gems on elpee. Only it’s not always easy to find your way around a foreign city. You’re already busy enough looking for the main tourist attractions like La Sagrada de Familia and Casa Milá. To then add in the local record stores is quite a challenge. It takes some preparatory work before you have an idea of the city and where the important locations are in Barcelona. I decided to extend the preparatory work a bit by adding the most important places to the map where you can score good LP acquisitions. This includes record stores as well as the big daily flea market in Barcelona where vinyl can often be found as well.
If you follow the crowd (or the other tourists) in Barcelona you will normally get off the train at the centrally located Catalunya train station. This also happens to be the point where most of the record stores are located in the area. Many people just don’t know that an interesting flea market is held there on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. This flea market is known in Barcelona under the name: «Mercats del Encants». To reach it, you need to get off at the earlier Arc de Triomf train station.    At the Mercats del Encants you can often find favorably priced LPs.
