Desobedeciendo a su ama, Sila, secretamente cristiana, dejó a las hijas de Calcia al cuidado de varias familias. Marina y sus hermanas fueron bautizadas por el obispo de Braga San Ovidio (Ovidio) y educadas en la fe cristiana. A los veinte años, fueron acusadas de ser cristianas y llevadas ante su padre el gobernador. Éste las reconoció como sus propias hijas y les pidió que renunciaran a su fe, prometiéndoles lujos. Santa Quiteria es una de sus hermanas que también es venerada como santa.
Las hermanas se negaron y fueron encarceladas. Consiguieron escapar y finalmente fueron martirizadas por su fe. En el lugar donde fueron decapitadas brotó un manantial de agua; el lugar se llamó Aguas Santas.
La leyenda de Marina es similar a la de otra santa portuguesa, la virgen mártir Santa Quiteria, y también se cree que Santa Quiteria es su hermana. Su leyenda se confunde a veces con la de Margarita de Antioquía, que a veces también se llamaba Marina.
