Songbirds from our region
The dark pattern in canaries is formed by melanins.Melanins are pigment granules, globules and rods found in the feathers of the bird. The location, quantity and type of melanins determine the color of the bird and its pattern of markings. The very dark brown and black pigmentation is called eumelanin and the lighter brown is called phaeomelanin. The lighter brown melanin is found in almost every feather, while the darker eumelanin is usually confined to the cover feathers. The eumelanin lies over the phaeomelanin and gives the bird its pattern. This pigmented pattern is called bestreading. Several mutations have now occurred in canaries that affect pigmentation. Some affect only the eumelanin, others the phaeomelanin.
In classically pigmented canaries, all the melanins described above are present. The classic pigments are the black, brown, agate and isabel series. A pigmented canary always has one of these pigments as its main color. In the agate, however, the black pigment appears somewhat bleached out, resulting in lighter hems around the beaters. The isabel is characterized by a bleached brown pigment. Additional colors can be white, yellow and red. When we indicate a color of a canary, the pigment color is always mentioned first, followed by the secondary color. A black-pigmented canary with yellow subsidiary color is called black with yellow. A canary with agate pigment and red subsidiary color is called an agate with red. If the bird has a white subsidiary color, it is either dominant white or recessive white (see: white color canaries).
